How to Accept Credit Cards Without a Merchant Account
![]() |
The world of Internet business has become a thriving one. Now more than ever, entrepreneurs are moving their businesses online. If you're one of them, you'll need a way for your customers to pay for your goods or services. This is where a merchant account comes in handy. A merchant account gives you a way to process credit cards, debit cards, and electronic checks over the Internet in exchange for a fee. However, if you're a new business owner, or one with bad credit, you may find it difficult to obtain one of these accounts. Luckily, there are alternatives to the merchant account that will allow you to accept credit card, debit card and e-check payments from your customers.
PayPal has become the most popular and widely used alternative to the traditional merchant account out there today. They are quite similar to a merchant account in that they allow your business to accept payments via credit card in exchange for a transaction fee. Not only that, but your customers can pay using funds that are already in their PayPal account. Or, they can pay using an e-check that is tied to their bank account. For each transaction, the recipient is charged a small percentage (less than 3% plus a few cents) of the amount they were sent. It's fast, easy and ideal for most every business owner. And, it's free to open a PayPal account. There are different types of accounts available to meet every need, including Individual, Premier and Business.
There are many competitors and alternatives to PayPal as well. Whilst none of them are quite as popular, they are still being used to conduct ecommerce all over the web. These alternatives include FirePay, NetTeller and ProPay. Then, there's ClickBank. If you are an online entrepreneur selling an informational or software product, ClickBank can be ideal for you. In exchange for a one-time fee and a small per-transaction fee, you can put your item up for sale and ClickBank will handle the payment processing for you.
As can be seen, there are quite a few different options for businesses who want to accept credit cards without a merchant account. While a merchant account is ideal for some businesses, others will do better with one of the alternatives. Before deciding on a particular provider, do some research to ensure you make the right choice for your business and the needs of your customers.
