High Risk Merchant Accounts: Are They Right for You?
![]() |
A merchant account allows your business to accept and process credit cards, and even electronic check payments in person, online, or via telephone. If you've got a brick and mortar store, you might need a credit card processing machine. If you do business on the Internet, an online ecommerce merchant account will work best for you. Many people pay for goods and services with a credit card, which is why there are so many merchant account providers out there. There are also high risk merchant accounts, which are a bit different than the normal merchant account.
If you have difficulty in obtaining a merchant account, then you may be classified as high risk. Examples of high risks might include a business owner with poor credit or a certain type of business. Types of businesses that may be deemed high risk could include telemarketing, adult industries, gambling related businesses, online pharmacies, and businesses located offshore. These are only examples, of course, as policies for approval and risk assessment differ from provider to provider.
Many merchant account providers are in the United States, whilst others are located offshore. A high risk account may cost more than a standard account, but for a business that needs a way to accept credit cards, the extra cost can be worth it. If you don't take credit cards at your business, you're likely alienating a large amount of customers who want to pay this way. With all the high risk providers out there, every business owner can find the perfect solution for their needs.
One thing you need to remember about high risk merchant accounts is that although they're basically the same as a standard merchant account. They basically cost a bit more, or come with the designation of high-risk doesn't make them any less helpful for your business. Also, many of these account providers offer other services to their customers as well, things like fraud prevention, site building and hosting, and more. When choosing a high-risk account provider, compare various providers before making a decision. Also, you may want to check with the Better Business Bureau to ensure you are dealing with a company whose standing is favorable. A little research now can save you time, money and hassle in the future and ensure you choose the best provider.
