Normally, the company will run a credit check to make sure your credit is reasonably decent and your business is legitimate. Approval time varies from company to company, but usually doesn't take very long. Some companies even offer bonuses for new customers like free set-up and software.

There are a variety of merchant account options available for online businesses as well as traditional small brick-and-mortar businesses. If your business is strictly online, the transactions will be conducted strictly online. However, for businesses where you accept payments face to face, you will often receive a credit card processing machine. Many of today's credit card processing machines are wireless to allow for easy travel. This means you can accept credit cards from your customers wherever you go.
